How to Clean My Dog's Ears

Are you suffering from allergies? When you suffer, most times our four-legged friends are silently suffering as well. One problematic area is the dog's ears. Dogs with longer ears, such as labs, cocker spaniels, and basset hounds especially have problems as their ears hang down and do not dry out. They tend to get yeast infections. These dogs require routine care for their ears.

How do a care for my dog's ears?

Do a visual check. If your dog's ears appear dirty, use a clean cloth or cotton ball moistened with hydogen peroxide or ear cleaning solution and clean them. The inner-ear is delicate, so be sensitive of this and do not apply too much pressure. Most vets will be happy to show you the proper method to properly clean out your dog's ears, but I've also included a video from the ASPCA that shows you just how to do it!

How do I know if my dog has an ear infection?

If you notice your dog acting mopey, if he seems in pain, scratches or rubs his ear excessively, or uncharacteristically shakes his head frequently, closely examine his ear. You may notice redness, swelling, discharge, and a particularly foul odor. These are signs that a visit to the vet would be a good idea.
